Studies on the Effects of Antibiotics to the Antigens of Shigella Flexneri
SUH INN-SOO
Abstract
The effects of antibiotics on the antigens of Shigella flemveri were tested by treating Shigella flexmsri la, lb, 2a, 2b, variant X and Y, 3a and 3b, with streptomycin, aureomycin and erythromycin and the following results are observed.
1. The hyoagglutinability was observed, against the immune serums of parent and antibiotic-resistant strains, among the three antibiotic-resistant variants.
2. Some type-specific and group-factor antigens were lost by the acquisition of resistance against aureomycin and erythromycin but not streptomycin, and no special co-relation between the kind of lost antigens and the kind of antibiotic used.
3. Some antigenic factors which are not responsible for the determination of type and subtype are also lost in the resistant variants to three antibiotics.
4. The loss of antigen was evident in the variants resistant to aureomycin and erythromycin, but not so evident in streptomycin-resistant variants.
5. New antigen which parent strain does not possess was not observed among theantibiotic-resistant variants.
6. No direct effect of antibiotics,, -on the bacteria as antigen for agglutination react-ion was observed.
